Hi,

I have IP Cop installed on a Proliant DL380 G2 which is on the whole ideal, however the fact that it makes more noise than the average vacuum cleaner is bugging me somewhat. I'm using Debian on a similar computer and HP's hpasm package gives a range of services including variable speed control of the fans.

I've seen mention of these servers in the forums, so was wondering if anyone has been down the route of trying to regulate the fans with an IP Cop setup? If so have you got any advice on what to do / what to avoid? I'm not after installing the whole suite of management tools, quite apart from the potential for security holes, I don't really need anthing other than the fans running a bit slower.

Thanks in advance.

ISTR that there was a BIOS option to set the fans to "auto" which reduces the speed (after an initial noisy burst) at startup. It may need a BIOS update though.

Failing that - there may be a linux 2.4 utility out there, I'd have a dig around, as it is unlikely to need much library support, so should be either directly runnable or buildable for ipcop.

Worse case, unplug everything but the CPU and PS fan and see how hot/cool the system runs. Or put a resistor inline to the fan connector will slow them down.

Thanks for the BIOS tip, I had a good look, but couldn't find anything related, and my BIOS is already at what I believe to be the latest revision (P24). Perhaps this was only available on later versions of the hardware?

After a morning's futile Googling, I decided to start by trying the simplest solution, so I unpacked the .deb I had used on my Debian system (hpasm-7.8.0-100.etch26.i386.deb) into a local folder and copied the contents across. Then simply running
Code:
/opt/compaq/hpasmd/bin/hpasmd
immediately calmed the noise down. By running
Code:
/etc/init.d/hpasm configure
and confirming that I really did want to set things up, despite the lack of an SMNP stack that the HP software understood, I now have access to the command line tool to interrogate the system health.

Code:
root@ipcop:~ # /opt/compaq/utils/hpasmcli
HP management CLI for Linux (v1.0)

NOTE: Some hpasmcli commands may not be supported on all Proliant servers.
Type 'help' to get a list of all top level commands.

I hope that's of help to someone else out there.

I have a generation 1 DL380 had hpasm working under debian sarge/etch but I'm struggling with IPcop.
I have version 1.4.20 just installed and I'm not enough of a linux expert to work out how to get hpasm on it from the above posts...
Can anyone help...

Thanks Steve...

I was being dumb...
After persevering... I managed to unpack the .deb file on a debian virtual image on my macbook pro. I then scp'd the files to the right directory mkdir /opt on my IPcop 1.4.20 install my first mistake was to use usr/local. When I noticed I was getting files not found errors I realised my mistake.
I then ran the commands as per tobestool's post .... and all working ok... yipee!
I'm now wondering about getting it to run on boot and whether updating will wipe the files...

Thanks to all I would never have thought to do this without your help.... my old server lives to see another day ;-)

Thanks again Steve...

Steve,

I know this is a really old post but hopefully you are still out there. I have what seems to be the exact same setup you described - DL380, ipcop 1.4.20 but I can't get this to work. I think I have the same source for the compaq files (.deb)

When attempting to run hpasmd I keep getting an error "file too short". Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks
