No. Just because there haven't been update every week does not mean a Linux version is dead.

Has it only been 3 years since we last restarted our IpCopper ?
And it continues to work perfectly, thankyou.
Bert Lance is credited with originating the phrase "If it ain't broke, don't fix it", when he was quoted in the May 1977 issue of the magazine "Nation's Business".

Well yes ...
but, IPCop 1.4.21 bases on old kernel 2.4.* and don't have so good hardware support as 2.6.* .
I saw on IPFire forums lot of people that were using IPCop previously now switching to IPFire , because it have frequent security updates ( and kernel 2.6.* ).
anyway , is there any ETA on stable IPCop v2 or at least stable 1.9 ?

Just because 2.4 is smaller then 2.6, does not mean it is per definition older. The 2.4 series is still maintained and security wise a much better choice.

Agreed.
If you need to run your firewall on bleeding-edge hardwares, then IpCop may be an imperfect choice.
On the other hand, IpCop is perfectly suited to most older hardwares, and assorted unwanted parts that very many folks use for firewalls.
YMMV

The next version of IPCOP is current in alpha/beta phase (can't remember which) and is based on Linux 2.6.x.

Be careful what you read, IPFire was based (or still is) on IPCOP.

This is where I don't understand. especially for a router in the home / soho

i wanted a router for my home that didn't require power cycling every now and then. k so i look towards products like ipcop or ipfire

i also don't want to consume a lot of watts/hour. Newer hardware is ideal for this. so I look for decent performing low watt x86 solutions like those from intel atom or via

I need newer gigabit nic's because isp's are offering internet services > than 100 mega bit. so i need a newer mobo

so in other words, the direction software x86 firewalls should be going is newer hardware. not because it's new and more powerful, but because you can lower the watts and use full utilize todays internet service

if i wanted to build a box to run ipcop today by buying new parts i probably couldnt do it

makes no sense to me the direction of ipcop

The next version of IPCOP, 2.x, is based on the newer kernel of Linux (2.6.x) and will have support for the newer hardware (such as SATA, Gib NIC, etc).

The current version, based on Linux 2.4.x, was first released on 10/2004 (IPCOP 1.4.0). This was long before the current hardware set existed.

IPCop seems dead, but people in the know say it is not ... therefore it only looks dead but inside it is a living breathing soul :)

Yes, for all intensive purposes it is.
It's really sad.
I've had quite a few installations of Ipcop but it's time to move on after so many years of no new releases and updates.
I've already updated most of the installations to pfsense and the reason I'm here is that tonight I'm updating my own install at last.
Probably going with pfsense but I might try ipfire for a bit just to see how it is.
I just wanted to check one last time whether there were any news regarding Ipcop.
Over the last few years I've grown annoyed with Ipcop's lack of good backup/restore procedure
Can't restore config without having the key backed up too and the lack of proper support of flash drives (who the hell still uses floppies?!)
I had to do at least 4 complete re-installs and configurations from scratch, and it gets tedious when you have couple dozen or more of firewall rules.
But the worse is the lack of support for new hardware.
Hardware has become cheap, powerful, and more energy efficient. It's so easy to build a fast, quiet, and cheap box but what's the use when you can't get the on-board nic working.
Besides, I consider any software that's not seen and update or a new release in more than 6 months to be abandoned, neglected, or mismanaged. It goes doubly for security software.
Time to move on.

ipcop 1.9.20 just came out and it seems to be the release candidate 1 for ipcop 2

I really like the idea of having IPCop up and running for a few years, if I get it up! :D

Just for confirmation, see graphic below. YMMV
