ipcop support

can i use a wireless nic as my red interface, essentially sharing a wireless internet connection across my wired home lan?

Yes

Using a wireless nic in IPCop requires some hacking of the network initialisation scripts since to configure a wireless device you need to issue an iwconfig command, something the scripts don't cater for.

It will be simpler to use a regular nic as red in your IPCop and connect it to a wireless bridge device.

If you are up to the hacking though (it's not hard once you know linux) I can help you.

You should be able to use a wireless bridge. Check this device here:

It's fairly affordable. What you would do is configure it for your wireless network (ssid, mode, key and so on) and confirm it's connecting successfully. Then set it to bridge mode and connect it to a nic in your IPCop box. It should work kind of like a reverse access point.

Of course it's something else you'll have to buy, manage and troubleshoot should anything go wrong.

If you're still looking to add a wireless nic directly to IPCop the first thing you'll have to do is get a driver for you nic. IPCop has some built in if yours is not built in you'll have to compile it separately.

excuse me for intruding. i have the same delimma and your solution seems to be .. well, it'll help me. just one question.

i have a dlink access point. now, do i set it to ptp bridge or ptmp bridge?

I just struggled with this problem my self; the solution is actually quite easy.
1) Install ipcop (I used 4.10) and it should configure your wifi as green and another nic as red (obviously done with only 2 nics).
Anyway just set the red up as you want the wifi, yes even though it’s the wired Nic. Then set up the green like you want the wired.
2) Login as root, cd to /var/ipcop/ethernet/ and type VI /var/ipcop/ethernet
3) This part takes a bit of intuitiveness, because I can’t tell you what you have.
4) Basically you’re changing the values

GREEN_DRIVER=
GREEN_DEV=
GREEN_DISPLAYDRIVER=

WITH
RED_DEV=
RED_DRIVER=
RED_DISPLAYDRIVER=

and vise vers

THEN REBOOT
PS THIS MIGHT BREAK THE WEBIFACE!

However you can use this file to make all future changes to the network cards.
I originally set up my wireless as a static address and it found the network automagicaly.
Also I used an Orinoco silver PCMCIA card with this beautiful device

Both of which ipcop supports natively. If you want an Orinoco PCMCIA card go on eBay and buy a first gen apple airport hopefully the PCMCIA card wont be toast. (That thing is really convoluted) but that is an Orinoco card in there and the thing works great. Im going to pick up another one and try to bond two wifi networks and my cable modem.

Would just like to add a note to this. First, thank you for providing this info. It allowed me to get IPCOP working on my wireless internet connection. I have a gold card but I'm pretty sure the configuration is the same. Following your instructions, I got IPCOP working quickly & easily. When I installed the upgrade from 4.10 to 4.11 it changed the interface the wireless was on. It went from being eth0 to being eth1. By going into the settings file I was able to swap the GREEN_DEV with the RED_DEV & then it worked again.
