I want to control p2p on my network, HELP!!

General Notice

P2P/BitTorrent has many different uses. Some are considered illegal while others are completely legal. IPCOP and the IPCOPS support forum do not advocate using P2P/BitTorrent for illegal uses nor support avoidance of legal ramification if individuals or organizations choose to violate copyright laws.

The information provided here is to support the legal use of P2P/BitTorrent (i.e. distributed video/audio and Open Source Software).

Controlling P2P/BitTorrent On Your Network

There may be situations where you are unable to control the software installed on computers within your network (e.g. open visitor access). There are a few options to control P2P/BitTorrent.

No Direct Web Access

  1. Block direct access to the web using BOT
  2. Have all users connect through IPCOP's web proxy

L7Filter/p2pblock

  1. Install L7Filter
  2. Install p2pblock mod
  3. Select P2P/BitTorrent clients you want to allow or block

Preventing Legal Ramifications When Using P2P/BitTorrent

Client Based Protection

When using a client based protection method, there are several options. Most commonly used program is Peerguardian. Peerguardian downloads updates on IP which are considered “bad” and prevent connections to/from these IPs and your computer.

Server Based Protection

Applying mods to IPCOP can cause more problems then solutions provided. It is possible with the mod Banish to add IPs manually which a user considers “bad”. This can include not just P2P/BitTorrent traffic but also known spam server and botnets. Using a server based mod may require the user to manually update IPs.
